Two busy weeks!

Well, as we are sure your children will tell you, it has been a busy few weeks in year 6!

Last week, the children took part in a mock SATS week where they completed last year’s SATS papers in reading, SPAG, arithmetic and reasoning. We were very proud of the way the children conducted themselves during the assessments and saw great progress across many areas. The children also enjoyed our trip to the British Museum where they had the opportunity to think like Ancient Athenians and explore Ancient Greek artefacts. We certainly have some future historians among us with some excellent responses to our house quiz. Well done to Jake and Cam who will be awarded 20 points each for their houses as a result of their effort and detailed answers to each question.

This week, most of the children have been writing stories or flashbacks in English. The children have been very engaged by the writing stimuli including a story about a Giant’s necklace and clips from one of the Harry Potter films. In Maths, teachers have been going over areas for further revision based on the outcomes of last week’s assessments. We are now nearing the end of our science unit on ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ which will conclude on Monday with an intriguing investigation into respiration in yeast.

If you want to further support you children at home:

  • Children can use the recommended ‘SATS Buster books’ by CGP to practise SATS style questions in reading, SPAG and maths.
  • It would also be useful to go through the year 6 spelling list provided at the last parents evening to identify spellings which your child still needs to learn. We have now covered all of the year 5 and 6 rules and will be revising these along with year 3 and 4 rules over the coming weeks.

Please may we take this opportunity to thank you for all your support, including accommodating early and late rehearsals for the gym display this week. The children can’t wait to show you the results of all of their hard work next week!

Have a lovely weekend.
